Make Money Online With Affiliate Programs

By admin | May 12, 2008

I was thinking about what I would write about next and I thought that a common question is how to make money online so my next few posts are going to be a few different ways to make money online. When you decide to make a website you’ll want to have a clear idea of what your intentions are or you’ll find that you keep having to go back and make changes to your website.

What Is An Affiliate Program?

Affiliate programs allow you to make money by referring your website visitors to a specific companies products or services. Most affiliate programs are free and can be setup in about 5 minutes.

After you have completed your registration you’ll be given a unique id within a link to the website for example, www.VendorSite.com/affid=1234. When you make your own website you’ll simply link to the vendors website using this unique URL.

When a visitor to your website clicks on that link a cookie is placed on their computer to ensure that you are given credit for the referral. If the visitor completes a purchase with the vendor you’ll receive a pre-defined percentage of that sale.

Some companies pay you per lead such as mortgage companies. What happens here is if the visitor completes a form or some other lead generating method you are paid for that as well. As I mentioned, you’d run into this will mortgage companies in addition to insurance companies, credit card companies, etc.

Low Startup Cost

As I mentioned, setting up an account as an affiliate is generally free so it’s a great way of making some additional money without having to come up with any sort of money up-front.

If you happen to have a particular subject that’s related to your website you can search for companies that offer affiliate programs and link to them. This is your best option because if your website is related to cars it doesn’t make much sense to have affiliate links to baby gifts.

Additional Information

I have created an ‘how to’ page on making money with affiliate programs if you’re interested in reading information on affiliate marketing and easy ways to manage you’re affiliate campaigns it’s definitely worth reading.

Making Money With Google Adsense

By admin | May 9, 2008

I had a friend ask me the other day how he could make money online. I knew that he didn’t have the technical knowledge to build an in-depth website with a shopping cart and databases. I also knew that if I recommended a website like that he would hit me up to help him through the entire process so I had to consider something else.

He’s been a friend of mine for many years so I knew that he knows a lot about Ford Mustangs and he stays up on the latest Mustang trends. I mentioned that he may consider making a blog and adding Google Adsense to it. Once I talked to him about the ease of it and his only investment is $6.95 a year for a domain name and about $4 a month for web hosting he was sold.

We registered the domain name and setup a hosting account and then we installed Wordpress on the domain name and found a free Wordpress template to give it the feel that he wanted. It took us about 30 minutes to the the blog online.

After that I had him sign up for a Google Adsense account and added the code to a couple of places to his blog. After that he was ready to go and started writing various posts related to Ford Mustangs.

That was about 5 months ago and since then he says that he’s bringing in about $500 a month through his Google Adsense account. It’s not something that he’s going to retire on but as he builds a larger following he’ll start to earn more. Plus it sure helps with the way gas prices are today.

The other thing is that he’s considered starting a couple more blogs and if he can get them to the point where he is now he can make a nice supplemental income for about 1 hour worth of work a day.

What I’m getting at is that it’s very easy and affordable to make money online especially when you can integrate something like Google Adsense onto your blog. It’s free to setup an account and after you go through a short wizard you’ll be given a snippet of code that you can place in your blog.

If you’re interested in reading more on making money with blogs take a look at ProBlogger.net. In my opinion it’s the authority on the internet about how to monetize blogs.

Search Engine Optimization Book

By David | April 17, 2008

You may feel that we’re not quite to the point in this website building blog to get into SEO, search engine optimization, but it’s actually the perfect time. Rather than developing a site and finding out that your page structure, page naming, meta tags, content, etc should be different it’s best to know what to expect so that as you build your site you can do it right the first time.

In my opinion the best book for SEO is SEO Book. This is the most complete source for optimizing your website for search engines. Aaron Wall, the author, has taken the time to write an entire book on SEO and has done a fantastic job. Realizing that you’re new to website building I would strongly suggest that you spend the $79 for this book as it starts from scratch and build from there.

The great thing is that he tests his theories on his own personal sites and has developed the book based on his results. The great thing is that once you’ve purchased the book he offers a huge selection of free SEO tools to help you with your search engine rankings.

Here’s my personal case study that had me floored. I run the website SteakBrands.com and used to rank very well for my top keywords. Well slowly I started to slide down the top 10 until I was nowhere to be found. I purchased SEO Book and read it cover to cover even though certain parts were very basic. I then registered SteakBrandingIrons.com and built the site based on the information that he suggested.

Well, since I published the new website based on Mr. Wall’s recommendations, I rank in the top 5 of majority of my top keywords as well as number 1 for a ton of other keywords related to steak branding irons. His suggestions took some time to put in place and were very time consuming but in the end I achieved the search engine rankings that I expected.

With all of this said, I wouldn’t refer you to a product that I didn’t stand behind and this is definitely one that I would suggest. Also, Mr. Wall has a blog that he updates just about every day that has great tips for SEO.

My suggestion is to take a look at the SEO Book site and the testimonials. You’ll be very happy that you did!

What’s That Digg Button On Your Blog?

By David | April 16, 2008

what is diggOne question that I’ve received on numerous occasions is “What is Digg?” and “What’s that Digg button on your blog?”. I figured I’d leave a quick post to explain it as best as possible. There are going to be those who disagree with my explanation but this is how I see Digg.

According to Wikipedia.org, Digg is a community-based news article popularity website. It combines social bookmarking, blogging, and syndication with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control. News stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page through a user-based ranking system.

Basically Digg is a news site in which the tops results are based on the number of times an article is ‘dugg’. The more ‘diggs’ an article, image, or blog entry receives, the better the results. Now with that said, they are changing their algorithm to fight some of the ’spamming’ methods that have arose but the concept is still the same.

The great thing about Digg is that I find articles, videos, blog posts, etc that I would have never found if I didn’t view Digg. It’s like having my very own research team for interesting news. Creating an account with Digg is FREE and takes about 2 minutes. With that said, you can register for a Digg account by clicking here. Then you can ‘digg’ articles that you find helpful, interesting or even funny.

Plus once you’re logged in all you need to do is click on the ‘Digg’ button and the article is ‘dugg’. You don’t need to login or visit the Digg website every time you ‘digg’ an article. I really think it’s something that you would enjoy when you every have a moment to just surf for the latest news on a site other than the major news websites.

Now, how is Digg going to help your website? The amount of traffic to Digg is enormous and submitting your articles, blog posts, etc to Digg will definitely generate traffic to your website. The only thing is that your submissions need to be something interesting or your submissions won’t get ‘dug’ which won’t improve your ranking within Digg.

Well, I hope this helps a bit, you can read more detailed information on the Digg About Us page. Lastly, I always welcome you to ‘digg’ blog posts that I leave if you find them helpful or if you just feel that they could be helpful to someone else.
